Targets Associated with Parental Neglect

Neglect generally involves a parental attitude which precludes adequate consideration of the child’s needs. The parent is too involved or preoccupied to give the adolescent the necessary attention and sympathetic support he requires. Sometimes, factors depriving the adolescent of sufficient parental attention are beyond the parent’s control, such as prolonged illness or death of a spouse. Parent-adolescent separation is often a contributing factor in the case of parental divorce or desertion.

When neglect is persistent and severe, maladaptive adolescent patterns may include an inability to form close interpersonal relationships due to a lack of true concern for others, a lack of social skills, unrealistic expectations about the way others should behave, or a tendency to place excessive demands on others to prove their love. Failure to form satisfying interpersonal relationships may lead to anxiety and depression and a sense of emptiness. Anger toward the neglectful parent often leads to obsessive preoccupation with retaliation.

Other dysfunctional cognitive patterns might include excessive preoccupation with the missing parent, excessive wishing for recognition from that parent, or idealization of a dead or missing parent. Neglected adolescents may develop a tendency to exploit others, resulting in antisocial patterns and conduct disorders. Excessive striving for success is another maladaptive pattern associated with parental neglect. Self-blame is another response style stemming from the adolescent’s belief that something in him caused the parent to neglect him. Finally, a pattern of drifting may develop, characterized by lack of long-term goals and failure to plan and structure daily life.
